This too is Happiness

This too is Happiness… it’s been confirmed! I've got my seat for the show this November in Montreal!
I had read messages of this kind last week. Now I understand the excitement and joy of knowing that one will be there.
I’d like to understand why we get these intense feelings. In this gathering, there will be all manner of people in the audience and on the stage. What is it then?
I think that the artist and his creation, his performance, his way of doing things, and what the artist himself represents to us, can combine to take on a meaning that is beyond our comprehension. He and we, he and I, there are many levels.
There is the magic of an actual presence and of time that has frozen. There is the obligation to maintain our attention to this presence and to the moment in which we have placed ourselves. All the while, we are aware the moment is fleeting.
To live that moment as it happens, to hear the words, to let them in and make them ours. This is not passive; it is a gesture towards life, a gesture that binds us.
And then the music! A music that is inventing itself, expressed directly without being filtered.
And then the voices, ours by those vibrations that invade the space, then the voice of the man in front, who uses it to ask questions or give answers. And cries and laughs, and says thank you.
This too is happiness. People gathered in one place, beings very much alive who choose to be, at once, side by side and facing each other to tell all.

Tell Ol' Bill
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=95047293

I
The river whispers in my ear,
A hardly penny to my name.
The heavens never seemed so near.
All of my body glows with flame.

I

II
The tempest struggles in the air
And to myself alone I sing.
It could sink me then and there,
I can hear the echoes ring.

II
I try to find one smilin’ face
To drive the shadows from my head.
I’m stranded in this nameless place,
Lyin’ restless in a heavy bed.

III
J'essaie de trouver un visage souriant
Pour éloigner les ombres de mon visage.
Je suis échouée dans cet endroit anonyme,
Etendue sans repos sur un lit imposant.
Tell me straight out if you will,
Why must you torture me within?
Why must you come down from your high hill,
Throw my fate to the clouds and wind.

III

IV
Far away in a silent land
Secret thoughts are hard to bear.
Remember me you’ll understand
Emotions we can never share.

IV

V
You trampled on me as you passed,
Left the coldest kiss upon my brow.
All my doubts and fears have gone at last.
I’ve nothing more to tell you now.

V
Tu m'as piétinée sur ton passage,

VI
I walked by tranquil lakes and streams
As each new season's dawn awaits
I lay awake at night with troubled dreams
The enemy is at the gate.

VI

VII
Beneath the thunder blasted trees
The words are ringin off your tongue
The ground is hard at times like these
Stars are cold, the night is young.

VII

VIII
The rocks are bleak, the trees are bare
Iron clouds go floating by
Snow flakes falling in my hair
Beneath the gray and stony skies.

VIII

IX
Evening sun is sinkin' low
The woods are dark the town is too
They'll drag you down, they run the show
Ain't no telling what they'll do.

IX

X
Tell Ol' Bill when he comes home
Anything is worth a try
Tell him that I'm not alone
That the hour has come to do or die.

X

XI
All the world I would defy
Let me make it plain as day
I look at you now and I sigh
How could it be any other way?

XI

Spirit of the Wolf...Catskill Serenade

The Great Plains Wolf (Canis lupus nubilus), also known as the Buffalo
Wolf, is a subspecies of the Gray Wolf, native to North America. This subspecies once ranged across the western United States and southern Canada, but was almost completely wiped out by the 1930s. In 1974, it was listed as an endangered species, and since then its numbers have climbed. By 2004, there was a population estimated at 3,700 wolves living in Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. David Bromberg song performed By Bob Dylan, recorded in June 1992
("Bromberg session")

Where are the men
that I used to sport with?
What has become
of my beautiful town?

Wolf, my own friend
Even you don't know me
This must be the end
My house is tumbled down
My land it was rich, but I wouldn't work it
I guess I made a shrew of my wife
My duty clear, I could always find some way to shirk it
I dreamed away the best years of my life

Seems like only this morning, I went up into the mountain
No word of warning, just her usual curse
I hated the house, with all her nagging and shouting
But to be in this strange world was a thousand times worse
Where are the men
that I used to sport with?
What has become
of my beautiful town?

Wolf, my own friend
Even you don't know me
This must be the end
My house is tumbled down

He called me by name, he bought me that cheaply
He called me by name, I didn't know what to think
I watched their loud games, and oh, I drink deeply
Though no-one had ever asked me to drink

And you know that stolen liquor, it was sweeter than whiskey
Many times quicker, just to put me to sleep
That drinking with strangers can be very risky
My sleep it was long, it was twenty years deep
Where are the men
that I used to sport with?
What has become
of my beautiful town?

Wolf, my own friend
Even you don't know me
This must be the end
My house is tumbled down

The Shofar – When the ship comes in, 1964

THE SHOFAR
This is a religious Jew blowing the shofar (ram's horn) on the Jewish High Holidays (Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur).
The shofar is a natural wind instrument, one of the oldest known to the world. In earliest times the shofar was used by Jews as a musical instrument. Its most important uses described in the Bible were to intimidate the enemy, to declare war, and to call the populace to assembly. According to one tradition, on the first day of Elul, a month before Rosh Hashana, Moses climbed to the top of Mount Sinai to receive the Ten Commandments for the second time. He blew the shofar as a reminder to his fellow Jews not to sin, not to build another Golden Calf (as they had when Moses received the first set of the Ten Commandments on the mountaintop). From that time on, the shofar, which until then had been blown only on the first day of Elul, was blown each day for the entire month of Elul (the month of the Shofar) to remind everyone that the Days of Awe are approaching and that they must take stock of their lives and improve their conduct. (The Jerusalem Artists’ Cooperative)

ROSH HASHANA September 30, October 1, 2008

Rosh Hashanah .. is a Jewish holiday commonly referred to as the "Jewish New Year.".. Rosh Hashanah is the first of the High Holidays, .. the most solemn days of the Jewish year, which conclude with the holiday of Yom Kippur. Rosh Hashanah is the start of the civil year in the Hebrew calendar (one of four "new year" observances that define various legal "years" for different purposes). It is the new year for people, animals, and legal contracts. ..Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of man whereas five days earlier, on 25 of Elul, marks the first day of creation.

Rosh Hashanah is observed as a day of rest and the activities prohibited on Shabbat are also prohibited on Rosh Hashanah. Rosh Hashanah is characterized by the blowing of the shofar, a trumpet made from a ram's horn, intended to awaken the listener from his or her "slumber" and alert them to the coming judgment. ..The traditional Hebrew greeting on Rosh Hashanah is "shana tova", (pronounced [ˈʃanaˈtova]) for "a good year," or "shana tova umetukah" for "a good and sweet year."

ROSH HASHANA 30 septembre, 1er octobre 2008
(wikipedia)

When The Ship Comes In
ALBUM : "THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGING". - 1964

When The Ship Comes In
I
Oh the time will come up
When the winds will stop
And the breeze will cease to be breathin'.
Like the stillness in the wind
'Fore the hurricane begins,
The hour when the ship comes in.

I
Oh le temps viendra,
Quand les vents s'arrêteront
Et que la brise cessera de souffler.
Comme le vent se calme
Avant l'arrivée de l'ouragan,
A l'heure où le bateau viendra.

II
Oh the seas will split
And the ship will hit
And the sands on the shoreline will be shaking.
Then the tide will sound
And the wind will pound
And the morning will be breaking.

II
Oh les mers s'écarteront,
Le navire fendra l'eau,
Et les sables du littoral s'envoleront.
Alors la marée hurlera
Le vent tourbillonnera
Et le matin éclatera .

III
Oh the fishes will laugh
As they swim out of the path
And the seagulls they'll be smiling.
And the rocks on the sand
Will proudly stand,
The hour that the ship comes in.

III
Oh les poissons riront,
Comme s'ils nageaient à contre-courant
Et les mouettes souriront.
Et les rochers sur le sable
Résisteront fièrement,
A l'heure où le bateau viendra.

IV
And the words that are used
For to get the ship confused
Will not be understood as they're spoken.
For the chains of the sea
Will have busted in the night
And will be buried at the bottom of the ocean.

IV

V
A song will lift
As the mainsail shifts
And the boat drifts on to the shoreline.
And the sun will respect
Every face on the deck,
The hour that the ship comes in.

V
Une chanson se lèvera
Par-delà la grand-voile déployée
Et le bateau dérivera sur le littoral.
Et le soleil respectera
Chaque visage sur le pont,
A l'heure où le bateau viendra.

VI
Then the sands will roll
Out a carpet of gold
For your weary toes to be a-touchin'.
And the ship's wise men
Will remind you once again
That the whole wide world is watchin'.

VI
Alors les sables rouleront
Formant un tapis d'or
Pour reposer vos pieds fatigués.
Et les hommes sages du bateau
Vous rappelleront une fois encore
Que le monde entier vous observe.

VIII
Oh the foes will rise
With the sleep still in their eyes
And they'll jerk from their beds and think they're dreamin'.
But they'll pinch themselves and squeal
And know that it's for real,
The hour when the ship comes in.

VII

VIII
Then they'll raise their hands,
Sayin' we'll meet all your demands,
But we'll shout from the bow your days are numbered.
And like Pharaoh's tribe,
They'll be drowned in the tide,
And like Goliath, they'll be conquered.

VIII

..at Cincinnati’s Taft Theatre, October 16, 2007 …”Ain’t Talkin”

In the Presence of Don Quixote
Tim Lucas

October 16, 2007

Last night's Bob Dylan show at Cincinnati's Taft Theatre (where I saw electric Hot Tuna in 1972, Iggy Pop and David Bowie in 1977, and King Crimson's double trio in 1995) might be the finest concert I've seen in my admittedly spotty life as a concert-goer.

…
Though a more deliberately paced number, "Ain't Talkin'" -- a song with an alternately poignant and lacerating lyric -- was developed by the band as an absorbing groove that was at once a Sisyphusian parallel to the lyric and also, as with all the best groove songs, seemed to cut deeper and sweeter with each repetition. I remember looking through the binoculars at Dylan during this performance, seeing one of the most famous profiles in contemporary history looming over his keyboard while half-singing/half-speaking the lines "All my loyal and much trusted companions / They approve of me and share my code / I practice a faith that's been long abandoned / Ain't no altars on this long and lonesome road." At that moment, I felt that I was looking at the Don Quixote of Rock & Roll, and then I got the even stronger feeling that he just might be the real Don Quixote, too -- or at least the living man Cervantes knew, the inspiration for his immortal creation -- determined to walk that road to the end of his days, telling the capital T truth to every cockeyed windmill town on the map. And when he sang the chorus "Ain't talkin', just walkin' / Eatin' hog eyed grease in a hog eyed town / Heart burnin', still yearnin' / Someday you'll be glad to have me around," I felt every heart in the theater pour open. I know mine did.

Ain't Talkin' , Poland 2008

Ain’t Talkin’
ALBUM : "MODERN TIMES" - 2006

Ain’t Talkin’
I
As I walked out tonight in the mystic garden
The wounded flowers were dangling from the vine
I was passin’ by yon cool crystal fountain
Someone hit me from behind.

I

II
Ain’t talkin’, just a-walkin’
Through this weary world of woe
Heart burnin’, still yearnin’
No one on earth would ever know.

II

III
They say prayer has the power to heal, so pray for me, mother
In the human heart, an evil spirit will dwell
I am a-tryin’ to love my neighbor and do good unto others
But oh mother things ain’t goin’ well

III

IV
Ain’t talkin’, just walkin’
I’ll burn that bridge before you can cross.
Heart burnin’, still yearnin’
There’ll be no mercy for you once you’ve lost.

IV

V
Now I’m all worn down by weeping
My eyes are filled with tears, my lips are dry
If I catch my opponents ever sleeping,
I’ll just slaughter them where they lie.

V

VI
Ain’t talkin’, just walkin’
Through the world mysterious and vague
Heart burnin’, still yearnin’
Walking through the cities of the plague.

VI

VII
Well, the whole world is filled with speculation
The whole wide world which people say is round
They will tear your mind away from contemplation
They will jump on your misfortune when you’re down

VII

VIII
Ain’t talkin’, just walkin’
Eatin’ hog-eyed peas in a hog-eyed town.
Heart burnin’, still yearnin’
Some day you’ll be glad to have me around.

VIII

IX
They will crush you with wealth and power
Every waking moment you could crack
I’ll make the most of one last extra hour
I’ll avenge my father’s death when I step back.

IX
A chaque moment d'éveil tu pourrais craquer

X
Ain’t talkin’, just walkin’
Hand me down my walkin’ cane.
Heart burnin’, still yearnin’
Got to get you out of my miserable brain.

X

XI
All my loyal and my much-loved companions
They approve of me and share my code
I practice a faith that’s been a long abandoned
Ain’t no altars on this long and lonesome road.

XI

XII
Ain’t talkin’, just walkin’
My mule is sick, my horse is blind.
Heart burnin’, still yearnin’
Thinkin’ ‘bout that girl I left behind.

XII

XIII
Well, it’s bright in the heavens and the wheels are flyin’
Fame and honor never seem to fade
The fire gone out but the light is never dyin’
Who says I can’t get heavenly aid?

XIII

XIV
Ain’t talkin’, just walkin’
Carryin’ a dead man’s seal.
Heart burnin’, still yearnin’
Walkin’ with a toothache in my heel.

XIV

XV
The suffering is unending
Every nook and cranny has its tears
I’m not playing, I’m not pretending
I’m not nursing any superfluous fears

XV

XVI
Ain’t talkin’, just walkin’
Walkin’ ever since the other night.
Heart burnin’, still yearnin’
Walkin’ ‘til I’m clean out of sight.

XVI

XVII
As I walked out in the mystic garden
On a hot summer day, a hot summer lawn
Excuse me, ma’am, I beg your pardon
There’s no one here, the gardener is gone

XVII

XVIII
Ain’t talkin’, just walkin’
Up the road, around the bend.
Heart burnin’, still yearnin’
In the last outback at the world’s end.

XVIII
